Forensic officers have been searching the address since the discovery

A man whose body was found buried in a garden was allegedly killed by his daughter several years ago, the BBC understands.

Greater Manchester Police said a woman made a confession at Cheadle Heath police station on Sunday.

On Tuesday, remains believed to be of Kenneth Coombes, were found in a garden in Matlock Road, Reddish, near Stockport.

A 63-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The woman was named locally as Barbara Coombes.

A force spokesman said the man had not been formally identified but his family had been informed and was being supported.

Det Insp Dan Clegg said: “The investigation is still in its early stages and many questions still need answers.

“We will continue our work at the scene and hope in the coming days we can piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

“I would like to thank the community for their support and we will do all that we can to find out what happened.”

One neighbour said the discovery was “shocking and strange”

The cordon on this quiet suburban street has now been extended a second time.

After the grim discovery of human remains on Tuesday, the road was shut and the cordon now extends to 200ft as police continue to search the crime scene.

Forensic teams have worked through the night with much of the work focusing on the rear end of the garden.

Workmen at the property next door have been told they cannot work today as the search continues.

Door-to-door inquiries have been conducted on Matlock Road, with residents being asked if they knew Mr Coombes.

The questionnaire suggests he would have been in his late 80s in 2005 and electoral records appear to confirm he lived at the address.

One neighbour said the discovery was “shocking and strange”

Yvonne Harrison, who lives a few doors away from the crime scene, spoke of her “horror” about a body being found in a neighbouring garden.

“It’s really shocking and very strange,” she said.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “You never expect anything like this on your doorstep.

“All the neighbours are shocked and everyone is talking about it, but no-one seems to know much about that family.”

‘Daunting’

Neighbour Stella Ashton added: “We just saw the forensic teams and assumed there had been a break-in.

“Police came yesterday. Just asked if I had heard anything, any whispers.

“I didn’t hear anything other than she lived with her parents, many years ago her mum died and shortly afterwards her dad wasn’t seen again.”

She added: “This morning I had to come out with my two children because they get the private school bus at the end of this road and had to walk them through this area here.

“It was a bit daunting this morning when it was dark and police would only escort them one by one through, they wouldn’t let the children walk through on their own.”
